Small boat on the São Francisco river. There are few rivers in the arid Northeast which is dominated by the sertão, covering nearly 65 % of this region and extending as far north as Piauí and south into northern Minas Gerais. The major rivers of the northeast served as exploration routes during the colonial period. Dryland ranching dominated agricultural activities in the sertão.Pequeno barco no Rio São Francisco. Há poucos rios no Nordeste árido e dominado pelo sertão, cobrindo aproximadamente 65 % desta região e estendendo para o norte até o Piauí e para o sul no norte de Minas Gerais. Foi seguindo os vários rios do Nordeste que o sertão foi explorado durante o período colonial e a criação de gado dominou as atividades do campo.
