Description

The old locomotive and train station of the former Madeira-Marmoré train line in Porto Velho (RO). Begun during the ear1y 20th century as an outlet for rubber production, it was partially completed in 1912, but when the rubber boom ended, it was largely abandoned. Rubber trees trom the Amazon had been smuggled to Asia and by 1920 competition from this region abruptly ended the lucrative rubber trade and the economy of the North entered a long decline.A velha locomotiva e a estação de trem da ex-estrada de ferro MadeiraMamoré em Porto Velho (RO). Iniciada no início do século XX como escoadouro para a produção da borracha, foi parcialmente completada em 1912, mas largamente abandonada com o fim do surto da borracha. Mudas de seringueira foram contrabandeadas da Amazónia para a Ásia e por volta de 1920 a competição com essa região abruptamente pós fim ao lucrativo comércio da borracha e a economia do Norte entrou em longo declínio.
