Description
Collecting latex sap from a rubber tree in Belterra, PA. The discovery ofvulcanization and the invention ofthe pneumatic tire in the late 19th century, generated demand for rubber. This led to great interest in the Amazon region, at the time the only source of raw latex. Large numbers of "nordestinos" (people from northeastem Brazil) flocked to the Amazon Basin in search of economic opportunities. The rubber boom was concentrated around the city of Manaus which witnessed tremendous growth.Coleta do latex de uma seringueira em Belterra, (PA). A descoberta da vulcanização e a invenção do pneu nos fins do século !XX ocasionaram a demanda da borracha. Este fator provocou um grande interesse pela Região Amazónica, a qual continha, naquela época, a única fonte de latex cru. Um grande número de "nordestinos" (habitantes do nordeste do Brasil) confluiram para a Bacia Amazónica à procura de oportunidades económicas. O surto da borracha se concentrou em volta da cidade de Manaus a qual experimentou imenso progresso.
