Description

A group of undemourished Indian children selling artifacts to motorists. Nearly 150,000 Indians are scattered throughout the Amazon Basin, remnants ofthe estimated four to seven million the Portuguese found when they arrived in 1500. Contagious diseases , slavery or indentured labor, agricultural and mining development projects, road building and colonization have decimated innumerable tribes. ln recent years, attempts have been made to protect remaining Indians by gathering them on reservations and passing protective legislation. Implementation of the legislation has been slow and reservations have been invaded repeatedly by squatter and miners.
