Abstract
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer. Rectal cancer patients face genitourinary dysfunction, impacting physical, psychological, and social well-being. This study examined the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in rectal cancer patients to assess the impact of sexual dysfunction on quality of life (QoL).
This mixed method study included 19 completing the survey portion and 10 completing an interview, evenly split between men and women, and those with and
without a stoma. Most experienced significant sexual dysfunction, and discussion of sexual function was rare. Quality of life scores were high. Themes from the interviews included (1) the relationship between the patient and medical team, (2) impact of cancer treatment on daily life, (3) impact of cancer treatment on patient’s sex life, (4) social taboos influencing communication about sex and (5) patient suggestions. Further study is warranted in a larger population to understand survivorship needs in rectal cancer patients.
