Abstract

This historical study traces the development of labor unions in New Mexico’s nonferrous-metals mining industry, detailing early organizing challenges, major strikes, safety issues, and the evolving role of unions such as the Western Federation of Miners and the Mine Mill and Smelter Workers. It highlights the social, economic, and political forces that shaped union activity from the late 19th century through the mid‑20th century.
