Abstract
The report analyzes the water requirements of major energy-production technologies and evaluates the potential consequences of large-scale domestic fossil-fuel development, particularly in the arid western United States. The authors review water demands associated with coal mining, coal gasification, coal liquefaction, oil shale processing, thermal electric generation, refinery operations, transportation systems, sulfur-removal technologies, secondary petroleum recovery, and land reclamation. They emphasize that energy production depends heavily on water for cooling, processing, dust control, transportation, pollution control, and reclamation activities and that rapid expansion of domestic energy supplies could create significant competition for limited water resources.
