Abstract

The report analyzes the economic contributions of New Mexico’s horse racing industry and measures its effects on employment, income, government revenues, and tourism-related spending. Prepared by Berry Ives of the University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research for The Downs at Santa Fe, the study evaluates the activities of the state’s five racetracks: La Mesa Park, Ruidoso Downs, The Downs at Santa Fe, the New Mexico State Fair meet, and Sunland Park. Using attendance records, wagering data, employment statistics, payroll information, tax collections, and estimates of visitor spending, the report examines both the direct impacts generated by racetrack operations and the broader economic effects associated with nonresident tourism expenditures.
