Abstract
This essay purports to examine humanism as an historically dated basis of existence in western culture. It will discuss the beginnings, the development, and finally the capitulation of humanist modes of expression using, specifically, their manifestation in the field of art. It will take as its primary example the art of painting. As an introduction, a brief discussion of humanist philosophy may serve to set the stage for a closer analysis of art.
