Abstract
This exposition will be concerned with three major aspects of the thesis paintings: (1) the establishment of the historical context, (2) an analysis of the work of the painters that have influenced the conception of the work, (3) an explanation of the thematic imagery. Toward this end I will cover: first, what I hold to be the historical process underlying the development of modern painting; second, the work of those specific artists whose development reflects the above historical process; and third, the particular works of the aforementioned artists who have had a direct bearing on the paintings of the thesis; fourth, and last, I will deal with the ice cream cone imagery and its relationship to the formal development of the paintings.
