Abstract
The method of procedure employed in this study was to gather scattered material relating to the subject from art histories, artist, biographies, personal notes recorded while pursuing standard university courses on the history of art, art periodicals, and art bulletins, and attempt to condense the acquired material into a lucid organization of facts, places, personalities, and works. Photographic reproductions in black and white were made of portrait works by various major artists in the Italian Renaissance and compared sequentially to establish a possible relationship of developing styles. Those which seemed to epitomize the most significant advances were chosen for the purpose of illustrating the text.
