Born in 1889 in Costilla, NM. Family Genealogy, Description of the migration of his family who moved from Arroyo Hondo to Costilla in the late XIX century. Spanish ancestry. His father was a businessman who had a 'tiendita' [a small grocery store] and his family was large. The Presbyterians and the establishment of schools in Costilla. He witnessed harsh winter storms, there was no medical attention and water shortage encouraged the migration of his family to Colorado. Trabajo de esquiladores [Sheep shearing] in Colorado, pastores de la borrega, the eventual end of free range due to the construction of La Línea [Railroad]. His return to Arroyo Hondo, the development of neighboring villages like Springer and Roy. His father had a tienda in Roy, the seven year drought in Roy, a story about his experience as a sheep shepherd in La Cañada Ancha, other sheep shepherds, large herds belonging to various ranchers. His father had a ranch with vacas [cows], but he sold it to move to La Costilla. He was born Presbyterian, his parents were Catholics converted to Protestantism because the Catholic priest in the village didn't allow some of the people to become penintentes. Land Grant [Mercedes] and land dispute with a Colorado company and the eventual solution as men from Montana and Texas bought the areas in dispute. The Costilla Land Grant Company, Salome Cook from El Bermejo, vacas, no fences, only crop fields, issues with cows trespassing and damaging the fields. Stories about a company that came after Maxwell hired two tejanos who killed many people and armed a revolt, and other stories he collected from another person. He was a teacher in Chicago, family relations, and other local people.
