[In video collection] Born on July 25, 1911 in Mora, but grew up in Chacón,NM. Family genealogy, his father was active in the water rights organization and access to irrigation water in Chamisal and Chacón. Memories of his childhood in Chacón: working in the ranch, his father passed away when he was 11, so he used to help with the ranch chores from early age. They used to farm beets and other produce. They used to raise cattle, so they always had meat that was preserved by drying it for the winter time. They grew other produce but chile, which was bought at the stores in other areas like Velarde. Fruit preserving: orejones [dried apples], arroz con leche. Relatives on is mother's side in Mora and La Trementina. He attended the Presbyterian school in Chacón. The Presbyterian missionaries taught in English. His father was a Presbyterian pastor, his father was a good provider. Memories of his teachers and how fluent in English his mother was. He used to speak English only in school but out and at home he always used to speak Spanish. He attended the middle school in Menaul, memories of his studying and working in Menaul. He attended high school and the Normal college in Las Vegas, NM. His classmates and memories of playing football. His father was republican but he was not involved in politics. One of his sisters married a democrat man, Cosme García, who worked for the Corporation Commission and who served as a senator in the state legislation.
