Abstract

The novelistic genre within the contemporary scene of world literature is clearly under the aegis of today's Latin American writers.

In the rise of the contemporary Latin American novel, Juan Carlos Onetti is a key figure, if not the key figure as the Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa claims. With Onetti, reality and a vision o( the world which comprise fiction are subjected to a consciously derived system of aesthetics for the first time in Latin America. The focus of this study is the nature of Onetti's aesthetics. Its scope attempts to some extent to see Onetti in the light of twentieth-century European and North American novel and novelistic technique.
