Abstract

In the last decade of American life there has emerged a renewed interest in exploring the relationship between altered states of consciousness and what has traditionally been termed "religious experience." To a large extent, this interest appears to stem from a growing recognition that the modern scientific world view tends to be destructive, both of human life and values as well as of the natural environment. It has been suggested that a more spiritual world view based on an experiential awareness of transcendental realities is needed in order to counterbalance the current materialistic and mechanistic trend of American culture.
