Abstract
This thesis is a test of what is implied above. There are social movements which do not conform to the prevailing theories, yet which fit the definition of what constitutes a social movement. The big brother movement is the case selected for this study. This thesis is based upon a history of the beginning, spread, and progressive organization of that movement, and the question raised is the extent to which such a history reveals the supposed characteristics emphasized in prevailing theories.
