Abstract
This study describes the structure and functions of the popular sector of the official party in Mexico, the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional), analyzes characteristics of its leadership, and discusses the relationship of the sector with the political and social system of the country, especially its contribution to the stability enjoyed by Mexico in the last decades. The data consists mainly of interviews with the leadership of the sector, direct observation of activities, documents, and publications.
