Abstract

Since the inauguration of the Alliance for progress five years ago, there has ben an increasing number of coupe d’état in Latin America. Governments have been overthrown in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. The majority of these coups overthrow constitutionally elected left-of-center governments. It is this type of government that has been recognized by the United States government as the best suited for successfully carrying out the goals of the Alliance for Progress.
