Abstract

PIE CHART (Policies, Infrastructure, and Education to CHAmpion Rigor and Transparency) is a new program seeking to develop, test, and iterate sustainable models for improving the culture of rigor and transparency within the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. This program is a unique partnership between the Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center and the Department of Neurosciences. This partnership enables departmental interventions, but also aims to benefit the broader community at the University of New Mexico. Using the Center for Open Science's Strategy for Culture Change framework, PIE CHART aims to incentivize rigorous and transparent neuroscience research through the creation of rewards and changes to departmental and institutional policies; develop sustainable infrastructure to improve the rigor and transparency of neurosciences research by adding personnel and technologies to support data curation, data sharing, and collaboration; and develop a suite of educational offerings designed to build skills, knowledge, and awareness for rigorous, transparent research across all levels of experience, from graduate students to established research faculty. Some examples include Data Carpentries training, workshops on research data management and sharing, reproducibility hackathons, and rigor and reproducibility curricular courses. In this poster, we will describe the development of this innovative program during PIE CHART's first year. This includes data on educational sessions taught, plus any evaluation information available. We will also share baseline data on the Department of Neurosciences' open publication, data sharing, and other open research practices. Lastly, we will share preliminary information on adoption of new technologies and practices for open and transparent research across the University of New Mexico campus.
