Abstract

It is apparent that overall crime reduction must be achieved through the development of programs which are aimed at the reduction of specific crimes or related sets of crimes. Such programs must take a macro view of the circumstances surrounding the specific crime and must include assessment of such elements as motive, characteristics of offenders and targets, preventive, deterrent, and enforcement practices, and the overall approach to the handling of offenders as they enter, are processed, and leave the system. The significance of science and technology in the area of crime reduction has been recognized by the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice and has been written about in popular magazines from Playboy to Life.
