Abstract
This summary report from the 1987 Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives (SAIAN) presents estimates of selected chronic conditions in the non-institutionalized population ages 19 and older and eligible for services provided or supported by the Indian Health Service (IHS). These estimates are compared to similar estimates for the total civilian non-institutionalized US population obtained in the Household Survey of the National Medical Expenditure Survey. Overall prevalence estimates for the SAIAN population are adjusted for age and sex to the total US population; estimates of prevalence by sex are age adjusted.
