Abstract
The topic of collection digitization at academic archives have been of particular interest to archivists over the last decade. In today’s increasingly digital world, expectations for accessible online content have outpaced the efforts of academic archives to meet the demands of online researchers. It has become obvious that for academic archives and their photographic collections to reach desired audiences and maintain academic impact, archivists and their institutions must redirect their focus to producing accessible digitized content. However, recent research in library sciences and museum studies reveals that digitization alone is not enough. Various efforts must be made in conjunction with digitization efforts for audiences to engage with digitized photographic collections. This study will explore the effects of digitization as it relates to the J.B. Jackson Pictorial Materials from Various Sources collection at the Center for Southwest Research, University of New Mexico. The effects of digitization efforts on researcher engagement with this photographic collection will be examined with a goal of determining how digitization efforts might be improved in the future.
