Abstract
A literary journal devoted to the inquiries, experiences, and meditations of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center community.
This edition has wonderful contributions that underline why this journal exists. The idea of writing about our challenges, life experiences, and our missions in medicine create teaching and healing for the reader and the writer. I direct the reader to the essays entitled “3 Women” and “Pronouncement” as both pieces underline what the UNM Medical Muse is all about. Writing about one’s experiences as in “3 Women” as well as the lovely “how to” description of cultural competence in “Pronouncement” make our work as reviewers so fulfilling. I also believe “A Male Physician Goes to A Writing Retreat,” is an example of following one’s dreams to write, but also to share your takeaways. It takes me back to medical school at Hopkins in 1980, while taking a drawing class at the Maryland Institute of Art. Early on I was critiqued that my works were too scientific as it had come to light that I was a medical student. It was only when I blinded several of my next submitted works that my professor asked the class, “who did these interesting sketches?” Life is often not that fair and we must push forward on our artistic journeys, regardless of criticisms, or even worse, being told things aren’t possible. I hope this edition continues to inspire.
