Module 2 – Instructor Notes

  • Student Workbook, Activity Cards – same organization as before
  • Activity Cards – These cards are designed for group collaboration. Instructors print a set of cards for each group. Activity Cards are used for: 2B.3, 2B.4, and 2C.5.
  • Check Ups – Checks for understanding at some point after a lesson (activity and practice), whenever makes the most sense to you.
  • Check Ups for these units are available: 2D.2. Additional Check-Ups are welcome!
  • Exam Questions
    • Previously, a single exam over Modules 2 and 3 was assigned. For your convenience, exam questions for Module 2 are shared here.
  • Project
    • A project has not been designed for this module. Instead, students apply their learnings from this module in the project for Module 3 (linear equations). Project ideas are welcome!

Learning Outcomes & Lessons

  • Part A – Introduction to Equations
  • Part B – Introduction to Negative Numbers
  • Part C – Operations with Negative Numbers
  • Part D – Solving Equations with Negative Numbers
  • I can solve equations using additive and multiplicative inverses. (Part A)
  • I can use positive and negative numbers to represent real-world situations. (Part B)
  • I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide with positive and negative numbers. (Part C)
  • I can solve equations of the form a(b+x)=c using the distributive method and the division method, and I can decide when to use which method. (Part D)
  • I can solve equations using positive and negative numbers. (Parts A, D)

Part A

  • At some point during Part 1, you may want to introduce the ‘Multiplication is Repeated Addition Graphic’.
  • Activity 2A.3 is facilitated through PowerPoint slides rather than a handout.

Part B

  • Activity 2B.3 has cards.
  • Activity 2B.4 has cards.

Part C

  • Some activities use chips to help students visualize addition and subtraction with negative numbers.
  • The lesson summary uses direction (as positive or negative) to motivate an understanding of multiplication and division with negative numbers. Students seemed to find this confusing. So, the main exercise is introduced without context. Additional suggestions welcome!

Part D

  • Students seem to find 2D.1 and 2D.2 fairly challenging.
  • A Check-Up is available for 2D.2.
