Module 1 – Instructor Notes

Student Workbook

  • Learning Outcomes – Listed on the first page of the student workbook to familiarize students with what they will be learning.
  • Activities – Designed to be done in class in groups.
  • Practice – Designed to be done at home.
    • Practice questions are well suited to being presented on the board by groups, where students explain their thinking and problem-solving approach.
    • Based on the composition of your class and how quickly students progress through the materials, it may be helpful for students to complete some of the ‘Practice’ exercises in class.
  • Extensions – Part of the activity assignment that requires students to apply and often extend their learning to new contexts.
    • These are helpful for students or groups who move quickly through the content.
    • Some extensions may be appropriate for all groups, some for just one or two, and perhaps some for none.
  • Self-Assessment – Students can self-assess their progress on each learning outcome. The outcomes are linked to the specific lessons, as shown below.

Activity Cards

These cards are designed for group collaboration. Instructors print a set of cards for each group.

Check Ups

Checks for understanding at some point after a lesson (activity and practice), whenever makes the most sense to you.

Check Ups for these units are available: 1.2, 1.5, Percentage Contexts, and Tax and Tip, 1.7.

Exam 1

This exam requires students to read information from a table. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you orient the students to the table PRIOR to the exam.

In fact, you may want to present the table in class and ask students some questions to check for understanding.
