Abstract
This article describes the LTER program, reviews the development of the LTER network, identifies its contributions to ecological science, and considers ways in which LTER efforts can interface with other ecological research programs. The potential for an expanded network of scientists, sites, and programs is emphasized because of the importance of comparative analyses in advancing ecological science.
