Abstract
This essay proposes to present a view of certain aspects of colonial government and society in New Spain in the year 1563-1565, as revealed in the correspondence and reports of Licenciado Jeronimo de Valderrama, who served as Visitor-General of the viceroyalty during this period, and in other contemporary documents. Secondarily, it will attempt to illustrate the techniques involved in a general visitation (visita). In the present paper the author will, therefore, strive to clarify, on the basis of currently available documentation, various aspects of the Valderrama visitation and the last years of the administration of Viceroy Luis de Velasco I, rather than to draw final conclusions. Interpretations will be made, but with the understanding that they are subject to revision pending new discoveries in the archive.
