Abstract
During the last two decades, the study of women and gender relations in Brazil has developed dramatically, yielding an impressive collection of works which have considerably enriched our knowledge of the complexities of women's roles and activities. Never mere passive components of society, women of all classes have had their areas of influence, playing significant roles in the nation's development.
