Description

On January 3, 2026, following months of attacks on alleged drug smuggling boats and the seizure and blockade of Venezuelan oil tankers, the US launched a military strike on Caracas, Venezuela. President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken from their home and brought to the US to face criminal charges, while the Trump administration seeks to assert control over the Venezuelan oil industry. These events and their possible consequences will be considered within the broader context and history of US interventions in Latin America. There will be short presentations by Professors Mark Peceny (Political Science) and William Stanley (Political Science), followed by Q&A and discussion.

Dr. Bill Stanley is a Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, where he began his career in 1990. He studies political violence, civil wars, peacekeeping, and the reform of police, justice, and military institutions in the aftermath of civil wars, with a regional emphasis on Central America. He has a secondary research interest in the international politics of climate change. He has taught courses on international relations, comparative politics, environmental politics, Latin American politics, civil conflict and peacekeeping, and social science research methods. He has served as Director of Latin American Studies, Chair of the Department of Political Science, Director of the Latin American and Iberian Institute, and Associate Provost.

Dr. Mark Peceny is a Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1992. He teaches a variety of courses in international relations, comparative politics, and American foreign policy. His research focuses on democracy, dictatorship, and the international system, with specific emphasis on how liberal culture and republican institutions of government shape the behavior of democracies in international politics and how international actors shape processes of democratization within states. He served as Chair of the Department of Political Science from 2005-2011 and as Dean of UNM’s College of Arts and Sciences from 2011-2021.
