About:

In Squatter Life, sociologist Javier Auyero and anthropologist Sofía Servián examine how Argentina’s urban poor navigate everyday survival amid state neglect and structural violence. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork and Servián’s lived experience in a squatter settlement, the book reveals the precarious strategies—exploitative labor, patronage, and reciprocal networks, sometimes involving illicit exchange—that sustain life on the margins. Analyzing how these survival strategies intersect with class, gender, and political domination, the authors present a nuanced account of marginality in Argentinian squatter settlements while maintaining a deeply human portrait of survival and persistence.
