Description
Traditionally, mariachi was predominantly an oral and aural tradition, but the genre has developed into a much larger ensemble with expanded instrumentation and more complex arrangements, making notation necessary. The transcription and notation of mariachi music present their own set of challenges, particularly in representing its defining complex musical characteristics.
Adolfo Estrada is an Inclusive Excellence Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Music at UNM. His research focuses on historical and contemporary mariachi performance practice. Estrada has presented his research at multiple national conferences, including the Society for Ethnomusicology, the Society for American Musicology, and the American Musicological Society.
