Abstract

Much has been written about the increase in burnout, increase in rates of depression, and overall decrease in wellness for residents during COVID. Plenty of articles address different factors that could help to achieve wellness for residents including the popular Stanford model, which details the importance of personal resilience, workplace culture, professional fulfillment, and practice efficiency. However, little has been published about the wellness programs and committees that have been carried out during or post-COVID. What has been effective? What starts a wellness culture? Using UNM’s physical medicine and rehabilitation residency’s journey to wellness as a guide, this presentation will take you through 5 simple ways you can achieve wellness in any post-COVID academic program to foster better work, wellness, and learning environments. The 5 simple steps (1. Identify a wellness champion; 2. Focus on mentorship; 3. Don’t forget about the basics; 4. Be loud and be proud; 5. Make sure it works) will give any program the foundation and roadmap to foster their own culture of wellness in the post-COVID world.
