Landslide Associated to Unplanned Road Construction – An Inevitable Problem in Nepal

Description

Nepal is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world due to its topography and climatic condition. Earthquakes, landslides, floods, fire, thunderbolts are the major causes of disaster events, which accelerate weakening of the fragile ecosystems in this country. The landslide is one of the most common natural and anthropogenic hazards in Nepal. Natural and human factors such as steep slopes, fragile geology, high intensity of rainfall, deforestation, unplanned human settlements, and road constructions are the major causes of landslide. On the basis of discussion with key persons, this presentation demonstrates few examples of Unplanned Road Construction and Landslide Problems in Nepal. Excavators, Backhoe Loader, Dump Truck, Trencher, etc. are used without appropriate consultation with trained and skilled Engineers. To speed up the road construction, elected and non-elected political leaders allow bombarding of rocks or hills on the tract of roads. All these activities have direct relation with the landslides in the hills of Nepal. There is a strong need of policy to manage development activities especially in road network construction in Nepal.
