Abstract
This report evaluates the reliability of retail sales statistics in New Mexico and discusses the challenges of interpreting conflicting economic data. Using banking activity, employment, construction, agriculture, and mineral production as alternative indicators, the report concludes that the state's economy continued to expand during 1952 despite uncertainty surrounding retail trade estimates.
