Abstract

In 1926, sporadic fighting broke out in Mexico among Catholics who opposed Plutarco Elias Calles' implementation of the articles of the Constitution of 1917 limiting and restricting the activities of the Catholic Church in education, politics, civil rights and even, it was charged, in spiritual matters. In an attempt to prevent anarchy and also to bring pressure on the Mexican government to refrain from its so-called anti-religious policy, the League for the Defense of Religious Liberty (Liga Nacional Defensora de la Libertad Religiosa) organized many but not all lay Catholic groups. The Mexican hierarchy recognized the civil right of Catholic laymen to defend forcefully their essential liberties, especially their right to religious freedom.
