Abstract
Based on archival and printed documents and other historical sources, this study seeks to analyze historically the extent to which Portugal and Spain clashed 1n 1750-78 in order to gain territorial supremacy in the Plata and southern Brazil. Spanish efforts to exclude the Portugues3e from the Plata concentrate on General Pedro de Cevallos. He deservedly has been acclaimed "the last blaze of Spanish glory in America.””
