Abstract
The major objective of this research monograph is to study the development of Hull during the reigns of Edward I and Edward II, between the years 1272 and 1327. These are probably the most important years in the growth of Hull in the medieval period. They were the formative years of the port's development, and their span saw Hull grow to become one of the great ports of England. Some of the problems encountered in this study, however, did not permit it to be confined entirely to the reigns of the two Edwards. The story of the foundation of Hull, the question of the effect of the change of the channel of the Hull river, and the study of the port's earliest commercial activities, necessitates extending this investigation through the reign of Henry III, and even back as far as 1198, when Hull is first mentioned as a port.
