Abstract
Adjacent to the historic University of San Marcos in Lima is the Panteón de los Próceres de la Independencia, shrine to the heroes of the independence of Peru. Here in a special niche are the remains of the Englishman, General William Miller, reposing beside his comrades-in-arms and other who sacrificed much to liberate Peru from Spain. Many visitors to this shrine, however, know little of William Miller or, as the inscription reads simply, "Guillermo Miller." Practically all of those in the Panteón are regarded as saints and the events of their lives have been detailed profusely by writers. About this Englishman, whose life was richer in adventure than the subjects of many historical novels, almost nothing has been written and there exists no documented study of his career in South America.
