Abstract
The study of John Maunsell, the king's clerk, is the product of a search which began in the fall of 1947. As a newcomer to the field of medieval history, the interest and inspiration for this topic were found in the seminar of medieval history offered by Professor Josiah Cox Russel. The opportunity which he offered his students to investigate and study Maunsell was due to the fine collection of sources on the history of medieval England in the library of the University of New Mexico. Out of an examination of these materials and under the guidance of Professor Russel, evolved this study of the much advertised (and maligned) but little known royal clerk and counsellor.
