Abstract
Historians have expended a great deal of effort upon the principal leaders of both the Union and Confederate military forces. A number of fine biographies have been written on the major figures of the civil war, such as Douglas Southall Freeman's monumental works on Robert E. Lee and those immediately under him, Adam Badeau's several volumes on Ulysses S. Grant, Lloyd Lewis' account of William Tecumseh Sherman, and H. J. Eckenrode and Bryan Conrad's James Longstreet: Lee's War Horse. But in studies of these important figures, many of the subordinate commanders often have been relegated to minor roles, whereas actually they made important contributions to the overall picture.
