Abstract
Eduardo Barrios experimented at various stages in his career with the diary form as a basis of his fictions. This narrative frame, utilizing the language of speech, provided him with a form within which he could explore the aspects of human experience and personality that most interested him. The theme of jealousy, which had occurred in earlier works, comes to be the central theme of the novel Los hombres del hombre and, through the inherent intimacy of the diary form, generates the self-scrutiny of the protagonist. The confessional form also allows Barrios ample range to explore his hero--through the device of the inner multiple-personality--as a metonymic expression of man. Also examined in this study is the effect of the diary form on the internal structuring of the narration and on the language patterns and style of this work.
In addition to writing fiction, Eduardo Barrios had a long and vigorous career as a journalist. The bibliography of journalistic writings appended to this dissertation-which represents intensive research in the libraries and archives of Santiago, Chile--details Barrios' contributions in the field. To facilitate access to the information, the bibliography is divided into two major sections. The first part contains writings related to literary art: reviews of novels and stories; reviews of poetry and songs; theater reviews; reviews of biographies and autobiographies; reviews of anthologies and essays on literature; reviews of essays on general culture; reviews of chronicles, memories, and travels; reviews of lectures, printed and live; eulogies and commemorations; miscellaneous opinion by Eduardo Barrios on literature; and autobiography and fiction by Barrios appearing in Chilean journals. Part II of the bibliography consists of editorials appearing in Las Ultimas Noticias while Barrios was editor from 1933 to 1937, and in La Nacion, from 1951 to 1953, when he was a frequent contributor. The scope of these writings is broad, and includes such areas as agriculture, economics, education, and politics. Each of the entries in this section is annotated and cross-indexed.
