Abstract

The Hippolyte of Mathieu Bidar has nos been reprinted since the original edition of 1675, nor has there been a modern critical edition. The desire to do a critical edition of this tragedy was prompted by the prevalence of the theme of Phaedra and Hippolytus, which has been presented repeatedly on the French stage, and because of the editor’s interest in the role that the Greek tradition played in the French classicalism of the seventeenth century. Copies of Bidar’s Hippolyte are rare, since only three are known to be extant. The manuscript used is a copy of the original edition, printed in Lille in 1675. Some orthography of the original text has been changed to conform to modern usage, i.e. i resolved to j, u to v, & to et, ~ to n or m, and modern punctuation has been substituted wherever necessary. Capitalized common nouns, occurring elsewhere that at the beginning of a sentence or poetic line, have been changed to lower-case letters. Modern diacritical marks have not been added. The editor is indebted to the thesis committee for its encouragement and to Dr. Julian E. White, Jr., the thesis director, for his invaluable advice and patient supervision.
