Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the epic as it appears in Eskimo folklore and to delineate its most prominent characteristics. ... So far as I know, my study is the only one of its kind concerning the Eskimo epic. The evidence I have collected does not support a hypothesis that there is an Eskimo epic in the generic sense of the term ... However, in the body of Eskimo folklore there are tales which some collectors have labeled epic and there are others in unclassified collections which have epic characteristics. These tales are the Eskimo epic as it exists today, and the material with which this paper is concerned.
