Abstract

In May of 1840 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote to his fiancée, Sophia Peabody, the observation that while “lights and shadows are continually flitting across my inward sky… it is dangerous to look too minutely into such phenomena,” because, as he continued, “it is apt to create a substance where at first there was a mere shadow.”
