Abstract
Most scholars have failed to consider Henry David Thoreau’s A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers as a unified work of art. Rather they have dismissed it as a weak first book, lacking the depth of thought and artistry of Walden. This study attempts to analyze the kind of book A Week is and to show that its organic unity develops from Thoreau’s belief in the independence of man and nature.
