Abstract
Fondling the Brave Hello is a collection of poems covering the poet's experience in four distinct regions of the country. California, the poet's place of birth, is the lead section, with athletics the prime concern of the poems. Oregon, the place of the poet's marriage and the place where his daughter was born, is the second zone. Louisiana, where the poet and his family settled, is the third energized region explored. And lastly, the special place where the poet returns for spiritual nutrition, New Mexico, is brought to light in all its radiant possibility. There is a kind of exuberance in the book that keeps rallying toward exalted moments. There is a celebration of sensuality, of birth, of love's mysterious levels of height and abysm. Above all, this is a book about the space of America, its sprawl and hopeful wonders first excitedly sung by Whitman.
