Abstract

My method of research was determined by the poet's method of writing. Hopkins does not use language as he finds it but wrings from words and word groupings as much function and meaning as possible. Thus, there are words in his poetry which fit poetically in context, but it is necessary to delve into their obsolete or other remote meanings to obtain an understanding of the precise idea expressed or to obtain its enriching implications. Because of this, my research began in the New English Dictionary, where even the seemingly obvious words were looked up to bring out the many possible implications.
