Abstract
It is the purpose of this study to show the influence of higher criticism of the Bible upon the life and works of George Eliot. The critical attitude toward the Bible was the first disrupting influence felt by the brilliant mind of George Elliot, and “it created a change amounting to a revolution in Miss Evans's life. This study proposes to show the change in George Elliot’s life wrought by her first contacts with higher criticism, to trace its influence upon her motives and actions, to show how and to what extent it influenced her philosophical and intellectual development, and to follow its force and effect in her writings.
