Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to compare Marlowe and Spenser in a number of specific attitudes and achievements as poetic interpreters of the other primarily dramatic, I am not comparing specific works of each as literary types, or contrasting the men in their lives or specific relationships to other literary individuals. The thesis will deal, then, with direct indebtedness and interplay between the work if the two men and with comparison and contrasts in their poetic treatment of the following themes: 1) The role of the leader of men in shaping society. 2)The role of women as an ideal in society. 3) The relation of men to religion and religious conceptions.
