Abstract

Adonais, the elegy on Keats, is regarded by common consent as one of Shelley's two or three greatest poems and one of the greatest elegies in the English language. This current estimate approximates, if it does not confirm, the self judgement of a writer who by 1840 'had been clearly recognized as one of England's half-dozen greatest poets.'
